Stephens County, Oklahoma

Stephens County is a county located in the U.S. State of Oklahoma. As of 2000, the population is 43,182. Its county seat is Duncan6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,308 km² (891 mi²). 2,264 km² (874 mi²) of it is land and 44 km² (17 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.92% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 43,182 people, 17,463 households, and 12,590 families residing in the county. The population density is 19/km² (49/mi²). There are 19,854 housing units at an average density of 9/km² (23/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 88.37% White, 2.20% African American, 4.92% Native American, 0.30% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 1.44% from other races, and 2.74% from two or more races. 3.96% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 17,463 households out of which 30.40% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.50% are married couples living together, 9.20% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.90% are non-families. 25.30% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.80% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.44 and the average family size is 2.91.

In the county, the population is spread out with 24.60% under the age of 18, 7.80% from 18 to 24, 25.10% from 25 to 44, 24.00% from 45 to 64, and 18.50% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 93.70 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 89.70 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $30,709, and the median income for a family is $36,371. Males have a median income of $30,428 versus $20,055 for females. The per capita income for the county is $16,357. 14.60% of the population and 11.60% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 19.50% are under the age of 18 and 11.90% are 65 or older.
