Stefan Dragutin

Stefan Dragutin was king of Serbia from 1276 to 1282.

Dragutin was older son of king Stefan Uroš[?]. He married Katarina, daughter of Hungarian king Stefan V. Was leading hungarofile politics because of which he came in conflict with his father, from whom he then usurped the throne in 1276 with help of Hungarians. Then he started to fight with Byzantine Empire but had no success.

In 1282 while hunting he broke his leg and got ill, so he gave the trone to his younger brother Milutin[?] while keeping for himself area from mountain Rudnik[?] to Konavle[?] . In 1284 he got from Hungarians Belgrade, Srem[?], Mačva[?] and Bosnian areas Soli and Usora in which he ruled until 1316, establishing family relations with Bosnian ban Stefan I Kotromanić. He is the first of Serb rulers who ruled in Belgrade and made a capital of it. Near the end of 13th century he expanded his area, adding to it Braničevo[?] and Kučevo[?]. With his brother Milutin he came into conflict when Milutin wanted to politically tie Serbia tighter with Byzantine Empire and it became obvious that he does not intend to give the throne to Dragutin's son Vladislav as was agreed. Conflict between brothers was calmed by clergy in 1313. Near the end of his life he separated from his Hungarian friends and strengthened his connections in Serbia. Before his death he became monk Teoktist. He is burried in 1316 in monastery Djurdjevi Stupovi[?] near Novi Pazar[?].
