Stanton is a city located in Martin County, Texas. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 2,556. It is the county seat of Martin County6.

Geography Stanton is located at 32°7'51" North, 101°47'31" West (32.130740, -101.792072)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.6 km² (1.8 mi²). 4.5 km² (1.8 mi²) of it is land and 0.56% is water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 2,556 people, 854 households, and 651 families residing in the city. The population density is 563.9/km² (1,458.1/mi²). There are 1,002 housing units at an average density of 221.1/km² (571.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 73.98% White, 2.86% African American, 0.74% Native American, 0.31% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 19.56% from other races, and 2.54% from two or more races. 52.90% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 854 households out of which 44.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.0% are married couples living together, 13.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 23.7% are non-families. 22.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.92 and the average family size is 3.44.

In the city the population is spread out with 35.0% under the age of 18, 7.9% from 18 to 24, 26.0% from 25 to 44, 16.7% from 45 to 64, and 14.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 30 years. For every 100 females there are 87.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 84.9 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $27,961, and the median income for a family is $32,768. Males have a median income of $27,647 versus $18,333 for females. The per capita income for the city is $13,634. 22.0% of the population and 19.7% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 26.0% are under the age of 18 and 22.0% are 65 or older.
