St. Tammany Parish, Louisiana

St. Tammany Parish is a parish located in the U.S. State of Louisiana. As of 2000, the population is 191,268.

Geography The parish has a total area of 2,911 km2 (1,124 mi2). 2,212 km2 (854 mi2) of it is land and 699 km2 (270 mi2) of it is water. The total area is 24.01% water.

Demographics As of 2000, there are 191,268 people, 69,253 households, and 52,701 families residing in the parish. The population density is 86/km2 (224/mi2). There are 75,398 housing units at an average density of 34 persons/km2 (88 persons/mi2). The racial makeup of the parish is 87.03% White, 9.90% African American, 0.43% Native American, 0.74% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.61% from other races, and 1.26% from two or more races. 2.48% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 69,253 households out of which 39.30% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.40% are married couples living together, 11.00% have a woman whose husband does not live with her, and 23.90% are non-families. 19.70% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.70% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.73 and the average family size is 3.15.

In the parish the population is spread out with 28.40% under the age of 18, 7.30% from 18 to 24, 29.90% from 25 to 44, 24.30% from 45 to 64, and 10.00% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 96.10 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.40 males.

The median income for a household in the parish is $47,883, and the median income for a family is $55,346. Males have a median income of $41,876 versus $25,996 for females. The per capita income for the parish is $22,514. 9.70% of the population and 7.60% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 11.80% are under the age of 18 and 10.10% are 65 or older.
