St. John the Baptist Parish, Louisiana

St. John the Baptist Parish is a parish located in the U.S. State of Louisiana. As of 2000, the population is 43,044.

Geography The parish has a total area of 901 km2 (348 mi2). 567 km2 (219 mi2) of it is land and 334 km2 (129 mi2) of it is water. The total area is 37.07% water.

Demographics As of 2000, there are 43,044 people, 14,283 households, and 11,312 families residing in the parish. The population density is 76/km2 (197/mi2). There are 15,532 housing units at an average density of 27 persons/km2 (71 persons/mi2). The racial makeup of the parish is 52.58% White, 44.76% African American, 0.26% Native American, 0.53% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.86% from other races, and 0.98% from two or more races. 2.86% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 14,283 households out of which 43.00% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.10% are married couples living together, 18.10% have a woman whose husband does not live with her, and 20.80% are non-families. 17.50% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.00% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.98 and the average family size is 3.38.

In the parish the population is spread out with 31.20% under the age of 18, 9.70% from 18 to 24, 30.20% from 25 to 44, 21.10% from 45 to 64, and 7.80% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 32 years. For every 100 females there are 94.30 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 90.70 males.

The median income for a household in the parish is $39,456, and the median income for a family is $43,925. Males have a median income of $37,293 versus $22,323 for females. The per capita income for the parish is $15,445. 16.70% of the population and 13.90% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 21.70% are under the age of 18 and 17.80% are 65 or older.
