St. Helena Parish, Louisiana

St. Helena Parish is a parish located in the U.S. State of Louisiana. As of 2000, the population is 10,525.

Geography The parish has a total area of 1,060 km2 (409 mi2). 1,058 km2 (408 mi2) of it is land and 3 km2 (1 mi2) of it is water. The total area is 0.27% water.

Demographics As of 2000, there are 10,525 people, 3,873 households, and 2,784 families residing in the parish. The population density is 10/km2 (26/mi2). There are 5,034 housing units at an average density of 5 persons/km2 (12 persons/mi2). The racial makeup of the parish is 46.53% White, 52.42% African American, 0.10% Native American, 0.10% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.14% from other races, and 0.71% from two or more races. 0.99% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 3,873 households out of which 34.00% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.90% are married couples living together, 18.40% have a woman whose husband does not live with her, and 28.10% are non-families. 25.40% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.40% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.70 and the average family size is 3.27.

In the parish the population is spread out with 29.00% under the age of 18, 9.10% from 18 to 24, 26.10% from 25 to 44, 23.30% from 45 to 64, and 12.50% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 92.40 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 87.60 males.

The median income for a household in the parish is $24,970, and the median income for a family is $29,950. Males have a median income of $30,218 versus $16,853 for females. The per capita income for the parish is $12,318. 26.80% of the population and 22.80% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 35.50% are under the age of 18 and 23.20% are 65 or older.
