Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 5,950 people, 2,380 households, and 1,482 families residing in the city. The population density is 487.8/km² (1,263.1/mi²). There are 2,707 housing units at an average density of 221.9/km² (574.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 82.35% White, 0.44% African American, 0.45% Native American, 0.71% Asian, 0.17% Pacific Islander, 13.21% from other races, and 2.67% from two or more races. 28.42% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 2,380 households out of which 30.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.3% are married couples living together, 9.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 37.7% are non-families. 31.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older.
