St. Gabriel is a town located in Iberville Parish, Louisiana. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 5,514.

Geography St. Gabriel is located at 30°15'13" North, 91°6'5" West (30.253739, -91.101305)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 75.0 km² (29.0 mi²). 74.4 km² (28.7 mi²) of it is land and 0.6 km² (0.2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.76% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 5,514 people, 898 households, and 639 families residing in the town. The population density is 74.1/km² (191.9/mi²). There are 986 housing units at an average density of 13.3/km² (34.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 27.08% White, 71.98% African American, 0.05% Native American, 0.33% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.22% from other races, and 0.33% from two or more races. 1.12% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 898 households out of which 35.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 39.0% are married couples living together, 26.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.8% are non-families. 25.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.79 and the average family size is 3.36.

In the town the population is spread out with 13.8% under the age of 18, 16.0% from 18 to 24, 46.9% from 25 to 44, 18.3% from 45 to 64, and 5.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 33 years. For every 100 females there are 147.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 156.8 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $25,352, and the median income for a family is $30,859. Males have a median income of $28,281 versus $19,167 for females. The per capita income for the town is $8,952. 23.9% of the population and 23.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 29.0% are under the age of 18 and 25.3% are 65 or older.
