Squaw Valley, California

Squaw Valley is a town located in Fresno County, California, in the United States. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 2,691.

The Squaw Valley ski resort (http://winter.squaw.com/index) was the site of the VIII Olympic Winter Games, in 1960, west of Lake Tahoe.

There is a cable car (aerial tramway) system, which takes skiers from the base to the mountain top. The cars are attached to a fixed point on the suspended cable loop. When one car is at the top of the mountain, the other car is at the bottom.

Geography Squaw Valley is located at 36°41'31" North, 119°10'48" West (36.691806, -119.180019)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 147.0 km² (56.8 mi²). 146.7 km² (56.7 mi²) of it is land and 0.2 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.14% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 2,691 people, 1,025 households, and 779 families residing in the town. The population density is 18.3/km² (47.5/mi²). There are 1,160 housing units at an average density of 7.9/km² (20.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 88.33% White, 1.37% African American, 2.38% Native American, 0.56% Asian, 0.22% Pacific Islander, 4.83% from other races, and 2.30% from two or more races. 12.15% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,025 households out of which 26.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 63.9% are married couples living together, 8.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 24.0% are non-families. 19.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.62 and the average family size is 2.98.

In the town the population is spread out with 23.5% under the age of 18, 5.6% from 18 to 24, 23.7% from 25 to 44, 30.9% from 45 to 64, and 16.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 44 years. For every 100 females there are 97.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 97.4 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $39,417, and the median income for a family is $47,739. Males have a median income of $38,375 versus $27,850 for females. The per capita income for the town is $20,719. 8.9% of the population and 2.6% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 14.4% are under the age of 18 and 2.1% are 65 or older.
