South St. Paul, Minnesota

South St. Paul is a city located in Dakota County, Minnesota, approximately 10km south-southeast of the city of Saint Paul, Minnesota. It is also southeast of West St. Paul, Minnesota. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 20,167.

Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 15.9 km² (6.1 mi²). 14.9 km² (5.7 mi²) of it is land and 1.0 km² (0.4 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 6.51% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 20,167 people, 8,123 households, and 5,255 families residing in the city. The population density is 1,356.5/km² (3,515.9/mi²). There are 8,313 housing units at an average density of 559.2/km² (1,449.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 92.63% White, 1.28% African American, 0.57% Native American, 0.82% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 2.80% from other races, and 1.90% from two or more races. 6.42% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 8,123 households out of which 32.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.0% are married couples living together, 13.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 35.3% are non-families. 28.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.47 and the average family size is 3.05.

In the city the population is spread out with 25.4% under the age of 18, 9.0% from 18 to 24, 32.7% from 25 to 44, 20.1% from 45 to 64, and 12.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 95.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 93.1 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $45,216, and the median income for a family is $54,119. Males have a median income of $36,466 versus $28,415 for females. The per capita income for the city is $21,396. 6.1% of the population and 4.1% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 6.8% are under the age of 18 and 5.7% are 65 or older.
