South Kingstown, Rhode Island

South Kingstown is a town located in Washington County, Rhode Island. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 27,921.

Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 206.6 km² (79.8 mi²). 147.9 km² (57.1 mi²) of it is land and 58.7 km² (22.7 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 28.43% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 27,921 people, 9,268 households, and 6,394 families residing in the town. The population density is 188.8/km² (489.0/mi²). There are 11,291 housing units at an average density of 76.4/km² (197.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 91.11% White, 1.57% African American, 1.61% Native American, 3.08% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 0.73% from other races, and 1.86% from two or more races. 1.77% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 9,268 households out of which 34.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.4% are married couples living together, 9.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.0% are non-families. 24.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.56 and the average family size is 3.07.

In the town the population is spread out with 22.5% under the age of 18, 19.8% from 18 to 24, 24.4% from 25 to 44, 21.7% from 45 to 64, and 11.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 90.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 87.5 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $56,325, and the median income for a family is $67,912. Males have a median income of $50,519 versus $31,087 for females. The per capita income for the town is $23,827. 5.3% of the population and 3.1% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 4.9% are under the age of 18 and 5.0% are 65 or older.
