Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 5,397 people, 2,165 households, and 1,418 families residing in the city. The population density is 526.2/km² (1,362.9/mi²). There are 2,345 housing units at an average density of 228.6/km² (592.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 89.16% White, 3.98% African American, 0.63% Native American, 0.83% Asian, 0.07% Pacific Islander, 3.48% from other races, and 1.83% from two or more races. 6.78% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 2,165 households out of which 33.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.1% are married couples living together, 11.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 34.5% are non-families. 28.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older.
