South Bay is a city located in Palm Beach County, Florida. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 3,859.

Geography South Bay is located at 26°39'59" North, 80°43'8" West (26.666487, -80.718985)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 9.6 km² (3.7 mi²). 7.0 km² (2.7 mi²) of it is land and 2.6 km² (1.0 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 26.95% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 3,859 people, 805 households, and 644 families residing in the city. The population density is 549.8/km² (1,425.4/mi²). There are 935 housing units at an average density of 133.2/km² (345.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 24.23% White, 66.93% African American, 0.29% Native American, 0.26% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 5.83% from other races, and 2.44% from two or more races. 19.56% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 805 households out of which 41.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 39.5% are married couples living together, 32.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 20.0% are non-families. 15.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 4.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.39 and the average family size is 3.76.

In the city the population is spread out with 27.0% under the age of 18, 9.3% from 18 to 24, 37.3% from 25 to 44, 20.4% from 45 to 64, and 6.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 32 years. For every 100 females there are 172.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 210.6 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $23,558, and the median income for a family is $26,944. Males have a median income of $21,087 versus $22,321 for females. The per capita income for the city is $9,126. 36.7% of the population and 29.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 48.4% are under the age of 18 and 27.4% are 65 or older.
