Socorro is a city located in El Paso County, Texas. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 27,152.

Geography Socorro is located at 31°38'29" North, 106°16'29" West (31.641340, -106.274756)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 45.4 km² (17.5 mi²). 45.4 km² (17.5 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 27,152 people, 6,756 households, and 6,188 families residing in the city. The population density is 598.7/km² (1,551.0/mi²). There are 7,140 housing units at an average density of 157.4/km² (407.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 73.41% White, 0.35% African American, 1.34% Native American, 0.07% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 22.03% from other races, and 2.78% from two or more races. 96.43% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 6,756 households out of which 56.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 69.4% are married couples living together, 17.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 8.4% are non-families. 7.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 2.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 4.02 and the average family size is 4.20.

In the city the population is spread out with 36.1% under the age of 18, 11.5% from 18 to 24, 27.9% from 25 to 44, 18.2% from 45 to 64, and 6.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 27 years. For every 100 females there are 93.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 90.4 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $24,087, and the median income for a family is $24,336. Males have a median income of $19,063 versus $15,079 for females. The per capita income for the city is $7,287. 32.6% of the population and 30.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 40.3% are under the age of 18 and 26.5% are 65 or older.
