Sleep Is for Sissies

Tortured-artist-as-a-young-man-in-LA film by writer-director Alex Cox: it's his student film, made at UCLA from 1978 to 1980.

At one stage the film was 55 minutes in length. The director cut it down to 45 minutes "because it seemed too comprehensible at 55." The result is an obscure tale of drugs, a drowned woman, mysterious pictures, and the flight into the desert which is an essential element in most of Cox's films, including SID & NANCY, STRAIGHT TO HELL, EL PATRULLERO, DEATH & THE COMPASSS, and THREE BUSINESSMEN.

Outstanding cinematography is by Michael Miner, later director of BOY WITH A RAY GUN and co-writer of ROBOCOP, and Tom Richmond, with whom Cox worked several more times. Music is by Gregg Weissman, Tonio K, and Sid Vicious.
