Silver Lake, Kansas

Silver Lake is a city located in Shawnee County, Kansas. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 1,358.

Geography Silver Lake is located at 39°6'9" North, 95°51'33" West (39.102431, -95.859047)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.5 km² (0.6 mi²). 1.4 km² (0.6 mi²) of it is land and 1.79% is water.

Silver Lake is the nearest city to Topeka to the west, along highway 24. Recently Silver Lake has had a higher proportion of its citizens communiting into Topeka.

The next town west along highway 24 is Rossville.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 1,358 people, 538 households, and 394 families residing in the city. The population density is 953.3/km² (2,470.7/mi²). There are 568 housing units at an average density of 398.7/km² (1,033.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 96.83% White, 0.07% African American, 0.74% Native American, 0.22% Asian, 0.07% Pacific Islander, 0.59% from other races, and 1.47% from two or more races. 1.77% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 538 households out of which 35.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.3% are married couples living together, 9.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.6% are non-families. 24.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.52 and the average family size is 2.98.

In the city the population is spread out with 28.4% under the age of 18, 7.8% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 25.8% from 45 to 64, and 10.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 105.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 96.6 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $52,788, and the median income for a family is $59,875. Males have a median income of $40,847 versus $28,438 for females. The per capita income for the city is $20,290. 4.2% of the population and 2.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 1.9% are under the age of 18 and 3.8% are 65 or older.
