Silsbee is a city located in Hardin County, Texas. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 6,393.

Geography Silsbee is located at 30°20'53" North, 94°10'49" West (30.348095, -94.180220)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 19.5 km² (7.5 mi²). 19.5 km² (7.5 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 6,393 people, 2,385 households, and 1,714 families residing in the city. The population density is 327.8/km² (849.0/mi²). There are 2,662 housing units at an average density of 136.5/km² (353.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 65.85% White, 32.04% African American, 0.17% Native American, 0.38% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.84% from other races, and 0.69% from two or more races. 2.39% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 2,385 households out of which 35.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.8% are married couples living together, 17.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.1% are non-families. 25.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.56 and the average family size is 3.06.

In the city the population is spread out with 27.3% under the age of 18, 7.4% from 18 to 24, 25.3% from 25 to 44, 21.0% from 45 to 64, and 19.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 86.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 78.0 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $33,549, and the median income for a family is $40,784. Males have a median income of $35,351 versus $23,558 for females. The per capita income for the city is $19,111. 17.2% of the population and 15.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 21.4% are under the age of 18 and 12.9% are 65 or older.
