Shmuel Yosef Agnon

Shmuel Yosef Agnon (1888-1970) was the first Hebrew writer to win the Nobel Prize in literature (1966).

One of the central figures in modern Hebrew fiction, his works deal with the conflict between traditional Jewish life and the modern world, and attempt to recapture the fading traditions of the European shtetl (township).
