Shippen Township, Cameron County, Pennsylvania

Shippen Township is a township located in Cameron County, Pennsylvania. As of the 2000 census, the township had a total population of 2,495.

Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 407.0 km² (157.1 mi²). 407.0 km² (157.1 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 2,495 people, 989 households, and 725 families residing in the township. The population density is 6.1/km² (15.9/mi²). There are 1,458 housing units at an average density of 3.6/km² (9.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the township is 99.48% White, 0.08% African American, 0.00% Native American, 0.12% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.32% from two or more races. 0.24% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 989 households out of which 29.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.7% are married couples living together, 7.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.6% are non-families. 22.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.51 and the average family size is 2.93.

In the township the population is spread out with 24.5% under the age of 18, 5.3% from 18 to 24, 24.3% from 25 to 44, 27.5% from 45 to 64, and 18.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 42 years. For every 100 females there are 105.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 105.0 males.

The median income for a household in the township is $37,781, and the median income for a family is $43,487. Males have a median income of $31,235 versus $21,422 for females. The per capita income for the township is $17,228. 8.5% of the population and 6.7% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 14.3% are under the age of 18 and 3.5% are 65 or older.
