Shiawassee County is a county located in the U.S. State of Michigan. As of 2000, the population is 71,687. Its county seat is Corunna6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,400 km² (541 mi²). 1,395 km² (539 mi²) of it is land and 5 km² (2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.37% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 71,687 people, 26,896 households, and 19,849 families residing in the county. The population density is 51/km² (133/mi²). There are 29,087 housing units at an average density of 21/km² (54/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 97.39% White, 0.19% African American, 0.47% Native American, 0.28% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.49% from other races, and 1.17% from two or more races. 1.81% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 26,896 households out of which 35.30% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.10% are married couples living together, 10.30% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.20% are non-families. 21.70% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.10% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.64 and the average family size is 3.06.

In the county the population is spread out with 26.80% under the age of 18, 8.30% from 18 to 24, 29.20% from 25 to 44, 23.60% from 45 to 64, and 12.00% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 96.50 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 93.50 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $42,553, and the median income for a family is $49,329. Males have a median income of $39,190 versus $25,063 for females. The per capita income for the county is $19,229. 7.80% of the population and 5.70% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 9.30% are under the age of 18 and 7.70% are 65 or older.
