Shepard tone

Redirected from Shepard Tone

A Shepard tone is a sound consisting of a superposition of tones separated by octaves. An auditory illusion can be constructed by sweeping the frequency of a complex tone up an octave while passing the tone through a wide bandpass filter. The tone appears to rise continuously in pitch, yet return to its starting note.
