Shelbyville, Tennessee

Shelbyville is a city located in Bedford County, Tennessee. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 16,105. It is the county seat of Bedford County6.

Geography Shelbyville is located at 35°29'20" North, 86°27'8" West (35.488988, -86.452353)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 40.1 km² (15.5 mi²). 40.1 km² (15.5 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 16,105 people, 6,066 households, and 4,155 families residing in the city. The population density is 402.0/km² (1,041.3/mi²). There are 6,550 housing units at an average density of 163.5/km² (423.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 77.14% White, 14.98% African American, 0.35% Native American, 0.70% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 5.02% from other races, and 1.78% from two or more races. 14.55% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 6,066 households out of which 31.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.0% are married couples living together, 16.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.5% are non-families. 26.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.59 and the average family size is 3.05.

In the city the population is spread out with 25.2% under the age of 18, 11.9% from 18 to 24, 28.9% from 25 to 44, 18.8% from 45 to 64, and 15.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 94.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 91.5 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $31,593, and the median income for a family is $36,465. Males have a median income of $25,754 versus $19,065 for females. The per capita income for the city is $14,260. 16.2% of the population and 12.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 18.4% are under the age of 18 and 22.1% are 65 or older.
