Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 43,445 people, 16,561 households, and 12,056 families residing in the county. The population density is 41/km² (105/mi²). There are 17,633 housing units at an average density of 16/km² (43/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 97.26% White, 0.76% African American, 0.19% Native American, 0.59% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.50% from other races, and 0.68% from two or more races. 1.14% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 16,561 households out of which 34.70% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.20% are married couples living together, 9.30% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.20% are non-families. 22.70% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.50% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older.
