Shelby County is a county located in the U.S. State of Indiana. As of 2000, the population is 43,445. The county's county seat is Shelbyville, Indiana6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,070 km² (413 mi²). 1,069 km² (413 mi²) of it is land and 1 km² (0 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.11% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 43,445 people, 16,561 households, and 12,056 families residing in the county. The population density is 41/km² (105/mi²). There are 17,633 housing units at an average density of 16/km² (43/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 97.26% White, 0.76% African American, 0.19% Native American, 0.59% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.50% from other races, and 0.68% from two or more races. 1.14% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 16,561 households out of which 34.70% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.20% are married couples living together, 9.30% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.20% are non-families. 22.70% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.50% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.58 and the average family size is 3.02.

In the county the population is spread out with 26.70% under the age of 18, 8.00% from 18 to 24, 30.60% from 25 to 44, 22.60% from 45 to 64, and 12.20% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 98.00 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 95.80 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $43,649, and the median income for a family is $51,271. Males have a median income of $36,809 versus $25,021 for females. The per capita income for the county is $20,324. 7.60% of the population and 4.80% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 9.70% are under the age of 18 and 8.50% are 65 or older.
