Shafer Township, Minnesota

Shafer Township is a township located in Chisago County, Minnesota. As of the 2000 census, the township had a total population of 646.

Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 78.4 km² (30.3 mi²). 77.6 km² (30.0 mi²) of it is land and 0.8 km² (0.3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.99% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 646 people, 219 households, and 180 families residing in the township. The population density is 8.3/km² (21.6/mi²). There are 233 housing units at an average density of 3.0/km² (7.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the township is 97.83% White, 0.00% African American, 0.00% Native American, 1.24% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.15% from other races, and 0.77% from two or more races. 0.31% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 219 households out of which 41.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 70.8% are married couples living together, 9.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 17.8% are non-families. 14.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.95 and the average family size is 3.29.

In the township the population is spread out with 29.7% under the age of 18, 5.9% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 25.1% from 45 to 64, and 9.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 97.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 98.3 males.

The median income for a household in the township is $59,375, and the median income for a family is $61,458. Males have a median income of $41,500 versus $22,222 for females. The per capita income for the township is $20,983. 1.9% of the population and 1.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 1.9% are under the age of 18 and 2.9% are 65 or older.
