Sex and the City

Sex and the City is a book by Candace Bushnell[?], and an American television show based on it.

The television series, produced by the HBO network, portrays the lives of four best friends from New York City who are reaching their forties and looking for love, often in the wrong places.

The show stars Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall[?], Cynthia Nixon and Kristin Davis[?].

The show puts Carrie (Parker), a businesswoman-like writer, together with Charlotte (Davis), a naive, shy and conservative woman, Miranda (Nixon), a career-minded lawyer, and Samantha (Cattrall), a wild living, fun loving woman who stops at nothing to get the men she wants, yet has a heart of gold.

When it started in 1997, the show depicted four women in their middle thirties. As time has progressed, however, so have the characters and situations. Primarily a sitcom, but with soap opera elements, the show has consistently achieved both critical and popular acclaim. By the 4th series, many element of the series, such as the overall tone and the characters, have diverged considerably from the book.
