Seward County, Kansas

Seward County is a county located in the U.S. State of Kansas. As of 2000, the population is 22,510. Its county seat is Liberal, Kansas6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,659 km² (641 mi²). 1,656 km² (640 mi²) of it is land and 3 km² (1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.15% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 22,510 people, 7,419 households, and 5,504 families residing in the county. The population density is 14/km² (35/mi²). There are 8,027 housing units at an average density of 5/km² (13/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 65.44% White, 3.78% African American, 0.77% Native American, 2.86% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 23.81% from other races, and 3.27% from two or more races. 42.14% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 7,419 households out of which 43.50% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.60% are married couples living together, 10.00% have a female householder with no husband present, and 25.80% are non-families. 20.60% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.80% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.98 and the average family size is 3.46.

In the county the population is spread out with 32.00% under the age of 18, 11.70% from 18 to 24, 30.50% from 25 to 44, 16.90% from 45 to 64, and 8.90% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 29 years. For every 100 females there are 105.30 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 103.70 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $36,752, and the median income for a family is $41,134. Males have a median income of $29,765 versus $21,889 for females. The per capita income for the county is $15,059. 16.90% of the population and 13.90% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 21.00% are under the age of 18 and 7.30% are 65 or older.
