Serial polygamy

Serial polygamy is the practice, in the course of lfe, of marriage of one person with more than one partner, but not at the same time. It is a pattern of marriage that occurs in many Western societies in the late 20th and early 21st century. In these societies, bigamy is outlawed and adultery has strong negative social consequences. However, divorce and remarriage are socially acceptable. Therefore there is a pattern by which some people marry and then divorce and then remarry.

The practice of serial polygamy results in part from the social expectation that marriage is a union between two individuals with a strong emotional attachment and not between two families. The social expectation is therefore that if two invididuals are unhappy within their marriage, they should be allowed to divorce and remarry.
