Secaucus, New Jersey

Secaucus is a town located in Hudson County, New Jersey. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 15,931.

Before there was the landfill; before there was the Meadowlands[?]; before there was a Garden State Parkway; before the gentification, there was the overwhelming stench of the pig farms, soap plants and grease plants, and the continuous underground combustion of the junk yards of Secaucus, New Jersey. Travellers along the highway with delicate sensitivities clutched perfume bottles to their noses as they rode past, and the most vivid memories of those who visited the area in the 1940s and 1950s are of the aroma.

Favorite son Henry B. Krajewski, a pig farmer, was a frequent political candidate. He ran for President in 1952 and 1956, and U.S. Senator from New Jersey in 1954.

Geography Secaucus is located at 40°47'15" North, 74°3'42" West (40.787600, -74.061784)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 16.9 km² (6.5 mi²). 15.3 km² (5.9 mi²) of it is land and 1.6 km² (0.6 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 9.66% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 15,931 people, 6,214 households, and 3,945 families residing in the town. The population density is 1,044.3/km² (2,706.7/mi²). There are 6,385 housing units at an average density of 418.6/km² (1,084.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 78.54% White, 4.45% African American, 0.11% Native American, 11.80% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 2.79% from other races, and 2.26% from two or more races. 12.26% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 6,214 households out of which 25.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.2% are married couples living together, 10.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 36.5% are non-families. 31.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.41 and the average family size is 3.08.

In the town the population is spread out with 19.2% under the age of 18, 6.4% from 18 to 24, 33.5% from 25 to 44, 24.8% from 45 to 64, and 16.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 97.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 94.2 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $59,800, and the median income for a family is $72,568. Males have a median income of $49,937 versus $39,370 for females. The per capita income for the town is $31,684. 7.6% of the population and 3.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 6.4% are under the age of 18 and 9.0% are 65 or older.
