Sebring, Florida

Sebring is a city located in Highlands County, Florida. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 9,667. It is the county seat of Highlands County6.

Sebring is host to automobile racing circuit, created on a former airbase, first used in 1950. It hosted the 1959 Formula One American Grand Prix, but is currently best known as the host of the 12 Hours of Sebring[?], an annually held sportscar[?] race.

Geography Sebring is located at 27°29'44" North, 81°26'40" West (27.495623, -81.444373)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 28.5 km² (11.0 mi²). 13.3 km² (5.1 mi²) of it is land and 15.2 km² (5.9 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 53.41% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 9,667 people, 3,969 households, and 2,305 families residing in the city. The population density is 727.6/km² (1,883.7/mi²). There are 5,024 housing units at an average density of 378.1/km² (979.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 75.81% White, 15.69% African American, 0.57% Native American, 0.74% Asian, 0.10% Pacific Islander, 5.06% from other races, and 2.02% from two or more races. 11.00% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 3,969 households out of which 23.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 42.0% are married couples living together, 12.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 41.9% are non-families. 36.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 21.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.25 and the average family size is 2.91.

In the city the population is spread out with 22.1% under the age of 18, 7.9% from 18 to 24, 22.8% from 25 to 44, 19.4% from 45 to 64, and 27.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 42 years. For every 100 females there are 91.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 88.6 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $23,555, and the median income for a family is $29,915. Males have a median income of $21,799 versus $19,167 for females. The per capita income for the city is $15,125. 23.5% of the population and 17.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 36.0% are under the age of 18 and 12.0% are 65 or older.
