Scott County is a county located in the State of Virginia. As of 2000, the population is 23,403. Its county seat is Gate City6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,395 km² (539 mi²). 1,390 km² (537 mi²) of it is land and 5 km² (2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.38% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 23,403 people, 9,795 households, and 7,023 families residing in the county. The population density is 17/km² (44/mi²). There are 11,355 housing units at an average density of 8/km² (21/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 98.51% White, 0.59% African American, 0.14% Native American, 0.07% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.15% from other races, and 0.52% from two or more races. 0.42% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 9,795 households out of which 27.60% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.40% are married couples living together, 9.00% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.30% are non-families. 26.10% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.10% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.35 and the average family size is 2.82.

In the county, the population is spread out with 20.60% under the age of 18, 7.50% from 18 to 24, 27.30% from 25 to 44, 26.80% from 45 to 64, and 17.80% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 41 years. For every 100 females there are 93.30 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 90.70 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $27,339, and the median income for a family is $33,163. Males have a median income of $28,328 versus $20,553 for females. The per capita income for the county is $15,073. 16.80% of the population and 13.00% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 20.10% are under the age of 18 and 20.50% are 65 or older.
