Scissors is a town located in Hidalgo County, Texas. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 2,805.

Geography Scissors is located at 26°8'13" North, 98°2'43" West (26.136871, -98.045308)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 4.4 km² (1.7 mi²). 4.4 km² (1.7 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 2,805 people, 604 households, and 561 families residing in the town. The population density is 633.3/km² (1,642.9/mi²). There are 673 housing units at an average density of 152.0/km² (394.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 77.68% White, 0.04% African American, 0.21% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 20.96% from other races, and 1.11% from two or more races. 99.22% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 604 households out of which 65.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 72.8% are married couples living together, 15.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 7.1% are non-families. 6.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 1.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 4.64 and the average family size is 4.83.

In the town the population is spread out with 43.1% under the age of 18, 11.7% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 13.1% from 45 to 64, and 5.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 22 years. For every 100 females there are 92.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 90.6 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $18,963, and the median income for a family is $19,229. Males have a median income of $15,172 versus $14,438 for females. The per capita income for the town is $4,914. 51.6% of the population and 47.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 59.6% are under the age of 18 and 52.3% are 65 or older.
