Schiedam (population 75,000) is a city in South Holland, in the west of the Netherlands. It has a relatively high population density, due to its small land area. To the west is Vlaardingen, separated by a motorway, and to the east Schiedam is joined with Rotterdam. To the south is the Nieuwe Maas River.
Schiedam traditionally had an economy based on distillation of jenever (Gin).
