A highly stable loop can be made by tying a figure eight knot in a bight of rope. This knot commonly used by climbers to tie themselves onto the main climbing rope. The loop can be made by tying a figure-of-eight so as to leave a substantial working end below it, threading the working end through a carabiner, and threading it back through the original figure-of-eight. (This method is called the figure-of-eight follow through[?].)
