Savonlinna

The city of Savonlinna is situated in the east of southern Finland in the heart of the major Saimaa lake region.

The city was founded in the 17th century. It was based around the Olavinlinna[?] castle which had been built in the mid 15th century in an effort to control the unstable border between the kingdom of Sweden and its Russian adversary.

The city hosts a famous annual opera festival, based in the castle.
