Sand Rock, Alabama

Sand Rock is a town located in Cherokee County, Alabama. As of the 2000 census, the population of the town is 509.

Geography Sand Rock is located at 34°13'57.115" North, 85°46'13.516" West (34.232532, -85.770421).

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 11.7 km² (4.5 mi²). 11.7 km² (4.5 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 509 people, 195 households, and 154 families residing in the town. The population density is 43.4/km² (112.4/mi²). There are 215 housing units at an average density of 18.3/km² (47.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 99.41% White, 0.39% African American, 0.00% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.20% from two or more races. 0.00% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 195 households out of which 33.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 68.7% are married couples living together, 7.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 21.0% are non-families. 19.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.61 and the average family size is 2.96.

In the town the population is spread out with 25.3% under the age of 18, 7.9% from 18 to 24, 28.9% from 25 to 44, 23.6% from 45 to 64, and 14.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 99.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 97.9 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $35,179, and the median income for a family is $44,063. Males have a median income of $28,523 versus $17,375 for females. The per capita income for the town is $18,845. 12.6% of the population and 10.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 16.5% are under the age of 18 and 19.7% are 65 or older.
