San Luis, Colorado

San Luis is a town located in Costilla County, Colorado. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 739. It is the county seat of Costilla County6.

Geography San Luis is located at 37°12'7" North, 105°25'20" West (37.201988, -105.422360)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 1.2 km² (0.5 mi²). 1.2 km² (0.5 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 739 people, 322 households, and 200 families residing in the town. The population density is 594.4/km² (1,555.2/mi²). There are 376 housing units at an average density of 302.4/km² (791.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 60.49% White, 0.27% African American, 2.44% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.14% Pacific Islander, 29.50% from other races, and 7.17% from two or more races. 88.77% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 322 households out of which 28.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 40.7% are married couples living together, 16.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 37.6% are non-families. 33.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.30 and the average family size is 2.94.

In the town the population is spread out with 23.4% under the age of 18, 7.3% from 18 to 24, 21.7% from 25 to 44, 27.9% from 45 to 64, and 19.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 43 years. For every 100 females there are 94.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 89.9 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $14,213, and the median income for a family is $20,875. Males have a median income of $20,156 versus $13,333 for females. The per capita income for the town is $8,887. 34.3% of the population and 29.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 41.1% are under the age of 18 and 21.2% are 65 or older.
