San Jacinto County, Texas

San Jacinto County is a county located in the U.S. State of Texas. As of 2000, the population is 22,246. Its county seat is Coldspring6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,626 km² (628 mi²). 1,478 km² (571 mi²) of it is land and 148 km² (57 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 9.12% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 22,246 people, 8,651 households, and 6,401 families residing in the county. The population density is 15/km² (39/mi²). There are 11,520 housing units at an average density of 8/km² (20/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 83.64% White, 12.64% African American, 0.46% Native American, 0.28% Asian, 0.07% Pacific Islander, 1.63% from other races, and 1.28% from two or more races. 4.87% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 8,651 households out of which 30.00% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.20% are married couples living together, 9.70% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.00% are non-families. 22.60% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.10% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.55 and the average family size is 2.98.

In the county, the population is spread out with 25.20% under the age of 18, 7.40% from 18 to 24, 24.90% from 25 to 44, 26.60% from 45 to 64, and 15.90% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 100.50 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 97.40 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $32,220, and the median income for a family is $37,781. Males have a median income of $34,614 versus $22,313 for females. The per capita income for the county is $16,144. 18.80% of the population and 15.10% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 22.80% are under the age of 18 and 17.60% are 65 or older.
