San Diego, Texas

San Diego is a city located in Texas. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 4,753. It is the county seat of Duval County6.

Geography San Diego is located at 27°45'45" North, 98°14'20" West (27.762559, -98.238771)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.2 km² (1.6 mi²). None of the area is covered with water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 4,753 people, 1,548 households, and 1,187 families residing in the city. The population density is 1,125.9/km² (2,917.1/mi²). There are 1,793 housing units at an average density of 424.7/km² (1,100.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 78.06% White, 0.27% African American, 0.78% Native American, 0.02% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 17.72% from other races, and 3.11% from two or more races. 96.87% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,548 households out of which 40.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.3% are married couples living together, 24.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 23.3% are non-families. 21.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.03 and the average family size is 3.52.

In the city the population is spread out with 32.9% under the age of 18, 9.5% from 18 to 24, 25.1% from 25 to 44, 19.4% from 45 to 64, and 13.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 31 years. For every 100 females there are 87.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 84.5 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $19,250, and the median income for a family is $25,104. Males have a median income of $21,875 versus $14,622 for females. The per capita income for the city is $9,782. 32.2% of the population and 26.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 44.3% are under the age of 18 and 26.8% are 65 or older.
