Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 23,743 people, 9,061 households, and 4,802 families residing in the city. The population density is 828.1/km² (2,145.5/mi²). There are 9,612 housing units at an average density of 335.2/km² (868.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 60.71% White, 32.32% African American, 0.23% Native American, 3.19% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 1.47% from other races, and 2.06% from two or more races. 3.39% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 9,061 households out of which 27.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 30.4% are married couples living together, 18.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 47.0% are non-families. 33.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.36 and the average family size is 3.00.
