Geography Salem is located at 34°37'46" North, 92°33'42" West (34.629565, -92.561668)¹.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 9.0 km² (3.5 mi²). 8.9 km² (3.4 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.15% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 2,789 people, 1,069 households, and 857 families residing in the town. The population density is 314.9/km² (815.3/mi²). There are 1,096 housing units at an average density of 123.7/km² (320.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 98.03% White, 0.32% African American, 0.47% Native American, 0.18% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.36% from other races, and 0.65% from two or more races. 1.08% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,069 households out of which 34.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 68.8% are married couples living together, 8.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 19.8% are non-families. 17.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 5.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older.
