Saint Charles Parish, Louisiana

St. Charles Parish is a parish located in the U.S. State of Louisiana.

Geography The parish has a total area of 1,062 km2 (410 mi2). 735 km2 (284 mi2) of it is land and 328 km2 (127 mi2) of it is water. The total area is 30.85% water.

Demographics As of 2000, there are 48,072 people, 16,422 households, and 13,088 families residing in the parish. The population density is 65/km2 (170/mi2). There are 17,430 housing units at an average density of 24 persons/km2 (62 persons/mi2). The racial makeup of the parish is 72.40% White, 25.23% African American, 0.26% Native American, 0.55% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.64% from other races, and 0.91% from two or more races. 2.80% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 16,422 households out of which 43.40% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.40% are married couples living together, 14.70% have a woman whose husband does not live with her, and 20.30% are non-families. 16.70% of all households are made up of individuals and 5.40% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.90 and the average family size is 3.27.

In the parish the population is spread out with 30.30% under the age of 18, 8.30% from 18 to 24, 31.40% from 25 to 44, 21.00% from 45 to 64, and 9.00% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 95.20 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 91.70 males.

The median income for a household in the parish is $45,139, and the median income for a family is $50,562. Males have a median income of $40,651 versus $24,780 for females. The per capita income for the parish is $19,054. 11.40% of the population and 9.30% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 14.20% are under the age of 18 and 12.40% are 65 or older.
