Rutherford College is a town located in Burke County, North Carolina. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 1,293.

Geography Rutherford College is located at 35°44'45" North, 81°31'43" West (35.745825, -81.528737)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 5.9 km² (2.3 mi²). 5.9 km² (2.3 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 1,293 people, 541 households, and 381 families residing in the town. The population density is 219.0/km² (568.0/mi²). There are 570 housing units at an average density of 96.5/km² (250.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 93.74% White, 0.39% African American, 0.31% Native American, 4.25% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.15% from other races, and 1.16% from two or more races. 0.62% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 541 households out of which 29.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.6% are married couples living together, 11.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.4% are non-families. 26.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.37 and the average family size is 2.86.

In the town the population is spread out with 23.7% under the age of 18, 7.4% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 25.0% from 45 to 64, and 15.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 84.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 82.8 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $36,579, and the median income for a family is $42,206. Males have a median income of $31,116 versus $21,250 for females. The per capita income for the town is $18,148. 6.7% of the population and 5.7% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 8.4% are under the age of 18 and 14.3% are 65 or older.
