Rutherford is a town located in Gibson County, Tennessee. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 1,272.

Geography Rutherford is located at 36°7'32" North, 88°59'24" West (36.125689, -88.990051)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 5.9 km² (2.3 mi²). 5.8 km² (2.2 mi²) of it is land and 0.44% is water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 1,272 people, 542 households, and 365 families residing in the town. The population density is 218.3/km² (565.1/mi²). There are 589 housing units at an average density of 101.1/km² (261.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 77.91% White, 21.23% African American, 0.08% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.79% from two or more races. 0.63% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 542 households out of which 27.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.3% are married couples living together, 16.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.5% are non-families. 31.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 18.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.35 and the average family size is 2.91.

In the town the population is spread out with 23.7% under the age of 18, 6.6% from 18 to 24, 25.9% from 25 to 44, 23.7% from 45 to 64, and 20.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 78.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 77.7 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $29,954, and the median income for a family is $37,656. Males have a median income of $27,143 versus $17,093 for females. The per capita income for the town is $15,311. 13.6% of the population and 10.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 14.4% are under the age of 18 and 13.7% are 65 or older.
