Royal Lakes is a village located in Macoupin County, Illinois. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 190.

Geography Royal Lakes is located at 39°6'45" North, 89°57'43" West (39.112532, -89.961892)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 1.3 km² (0.5 mi²). 1.2 km² (0.5 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 9.80% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 190 people, 80 households, and 46 families residing in the village. The population density is 156.1/km² (408.1/mi²). There are 121 housing units at an average density of 99.4/km² (259.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the village is 15.79% White, 80.53% African American, 0.53% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 1.05% from other races, and 2.11% from two or more races. 1.05% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 80 households out of which 26.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 42.5% are married couples living together, 15.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 42.5% are non-families. 40.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 22.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.38 and the average family size is 3.26.

In the village the population is spread out with 30.5% under the age of 18, 5.3% from 18 to 24, 21.6% from 25 to 44, 21.6% from 45 to 64, and 21.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 97.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 76.0 males.

The median income for a household in the village is $17,708, and the median income for a family is $21,042. Males have a median income of $41,667 versus $15,000 for females. The per capita income for the village is $10,049. 27.3% of the population and 19.1% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 32.7% are under the age of 18 and 27.8% are 65 or older.
