Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 24,043 people, 7,933 households, and 5,973 families residing in the city. The population density is 436.8/km² (1,131.7/mi²). There are 8,438 housing units at an average density of 153.3/km² (397.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 65.69% White, 8.53% African American, 0.37% Native American, 0.38% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 22.17% from other races, and 2.81% from two or more races. 54.96% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 7,933 households out of which 41.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.4% are married couples living together, 15.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 24.7% are non-families. 20.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older.
