Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 22,904 people, 8,380 households, and 5,488 families residing in the town. The population density is 2,061.4/km² (5,335.2/mi²). There are 8,584 housing units at an average density of 772.6/km² (1,999.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 64.49% White, 10.90% African American, 1.13% Native American, 11.17% Asian, 0.41% Pacific Islander, 5.31% from other races, and 6.59% from two or more races. 13.20% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 8,380 households out of which 32.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.9% are married couples living together, 14.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 34.5% are non-families. 23.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 4.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.66 and the average family size is 3.18.
