Roscommon County, Michigan

Roscommon County is a county located in the U.S. State of Michigan. As of 2000, the population is 25,469. Its county seat is Roscommon6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,502 km² (580 mi²). 1,350 km² (521 mi²) of it is land and 151 km² (58 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 10.08% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 25,469 people, 11,250 households, and 7,616 families residing in the county. The population density is 19/km² (49/mi²). There are 23,109 housing units at an average density of 17/km² (44/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 97.99% White, 0.32% African American, 0.64% Native American, 0.19% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.10% from other races, and 0.72% from two or more races. 0.80% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 11,250 households out of which 21.90% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.70% are married couples living together, 7.70% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.30% are non-families. 28.10% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.00% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.23 and the average family size is 2.69.

In the county the population is spread out with 20.00% under the age of 18, 5.50% from 18 to 24, 21.40% from 25 to 44, 29.30% from 45 to 64, and 23.80% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 47 years. For every 100 females there are 96.90 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 94.30 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $30,029, and the median income for a family is $35,757. Males have a median income of $31,878 versus $20,549 for females. The per capita income for the county is $17,837. 12.40% of the population and 8.60% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 18.90% are under the age of 18 and 6.50% are 65 or older.
