Roosevelt County, Montana

Roosevelt County is a county located in the U.S. State of Montana. As of 2000, the population is 10,620. Its county seat is Wolf Point6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 6,137 km² (2,370 mi²). 6,101 km² (2,356 mi²) of it is land and 36 km² (14 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.59% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 10,620 people, 3,581 households, and 2,614 families residing in the county. The population density is 2/km² (4/mi²). There are 4,044 housing units at an average density of 1/km² (2/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 40.93% White, 0.05% African American, 55.75% Native American, 0.43% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 0.25% from other races, and 2.53% from two or more races. 1.23% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 3,581 households out of which 40.50% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.20% are married couples living together, 18.90% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.00% are non-families. 23.60% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.30% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.89 and the average family size is 3.40.

In the county the population is spread out with 34.60% under the age of 18, 7.90% from 18 to 24, 25.80% from 25 to 44, 20.20% from 45 to 64, and 11.60% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 32 years. For every 100 females there are 98.30 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 93.70 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $24,834, and the median income for a family is $27,833. Males have a median income of $25,177 versus $19,728 for females. The per capita income for the county is $11,347. 32.40% of the population and 27.60% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 41.60% are under the age of 18 and 15.10% are 65 or older.
