Rondônia is one of the
states of
Brazil, located in the northwestern part of the country, in the
Amazon Rainforest. Rondônia is named after Candido Rondon, who had several exploration missions through Brazilian borderlines, in the early
20th century. The territory was set apart from
Mato Grosso in
1943, under the name
Guaporé, as a part of
Getulio Vargas' policies to secure frontiers, and was promoted to statehood in
1988. It is a main exporter of
wood.
