Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport

Redirected from Ronald Reagan National Airport

Opened on June 16, 1941, Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport in Arlington, Virginia is the closest commercial airport to Washington, D.C., which makes it a favorite of federal officials. Prior to the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks the airport had 792 scheduled commercial flights a day. That number has fluctuated since, due to security concerns.

National Airport, as it was known for decades, replaced Washington-Hoover Airport, which was located near the present-day Pentagon and had a single runway intersected by a local street. Guards had to stop auto traffic during takeoffs and landings.

Reagan National was built by the federal goernment on mudflats alongside the Potomac River at Gravelly Point, 4 ½ miles south of Washington, D.C. The federal government relinquished control of National as well as Washington Dulles International Airport in 1987, when President Ronald Reagan signed the bill that created the indepednent Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority.

In 1998, the airport name was changed to Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport. Its IATA code is DCA.

Washington National has 3 Terminals. 2 of them (B and C) have check-in and baggage claim.
